Repaint vs Replace Siding — and Spray vs Brush

Repainting is far cheaper and the right call when the siding is structurally sound and just dated, faded, or peeling — paint renews it for a fraction of replacement. Replacement makes sense when the siding is rotted, warped, riddled with damage, or you want to upgrade material or insulation. There is a middle path on aluminum and wood: if it holds paint, a quality repaint buys many more years. Bear in mind that painting brick or previously bare surfaces is a commitment, since you will be repainting going forward. As a rule, paint sound siding; replace failed siding.

Spraying is fast and lays down a smooth, even film, which is why crews favor it for large expanses of siding — but it demands meticulous masking and skill to avoid overspray drift onto windows, cars, and your neighbor’s property. Brush-and-roll is slower but works the paint into the surface for better adhesion on rough or weathered wood, and it gives unmatched control on trim, doors, and detail. The best crews do both: spray the broad fields for speed and finish, then back-brush or hand-cut the trim and tight areas for control and bond.

For most Metro Detroit homes with sound siding, a properly prepped repaint — sprayed on the fields, brushed on the trim — delivers the best value and a finish that lasts. Replacement is a bigger project justified by failed material or an upgrade goal, not by paint that is simply tired. And whichever application method a crew uses, it is still the prep underneath, not the spray tip versus the brush, that determines whether the new coat survives the next round of Michigan winters.
