Why I started Motown Renovations

I built this so my neighbors wouldn’t get burned.

After 17+ years in construction, I know which contractors do it right — and I got tired of watching good people get overcharged or burned by the ones who don’t.

I spent more than 17 years in the construction industry. I don’t swing the hammer myself anymore — but in all that time I saw, up close, how much it matters who is actually standing in your house doing the work. The right person saves you money and headaches. The wrong one costs you twice and leaves you cleaning up after them.

What I never lost were the relationships. The plumbers, electricians, tile setters, roofers, carpenters, and remodelers I worked alongside for years — and trusted on my own projects — are still the people I call. That roster of contractors is the whole reason this works.

It started on the sidelines

Honestly, this began informally. Neighbors and friends kept asking me for advice on their renovations. A parent would pull me aside at our Sunday morning flag-football game, or between basketball and soccer practice: “Who do I call for this? Is this quote crazy?” And I’d just point them to someone good — someone I knew would show up, do it right, and charge a fair price.

The thank-yous meant something. So did the occasional good bottle of wine or scotch that showed up on my porch afterward. But what really stuck with me was how often people were one phone call away from hiring the wrong guy — and how much grief a single honest referral could save them.

What I’m actually trying to do

Too many homeowners get burned. By contractors who cut corners, by unlicensed guys who take a deposit and disappear, and by prices that have no basis in reality. Most people only renovate a few times in their life, so they have no way to know what’s fair or who’s legit. I do — and Motown Renovations is just a way to do at scale what I’ve been doing on the sidelines for years: connect you with a contractor I’d trust in my own home.

How it works — and why it’s free for you

Tell me about your project and I’ll match you with a vetted pro from my network — licensed, insured, and able to pull permits. You get a free quote and you’re under no obligation to hire anyone. It costs you nothing.

Here’s the honest part, because I’d rather you hear it from me: the contractors in the network pay a small referral fee when a match turns into work. That’s what keeps this free for homeowners — and frankly, it keeps me honest. I only do well when you end up with someone who does right by you, so I have every reason to send you the good ones and none to send you anyone else.

What every pro in the network has to be

  • Licensed and carrying real insurance
  • Able to pull permits and pass inspection
  • Someone I’ve worked with or vetted personally
  • Fair on price — no “homeowner tax”
