Two choices drive how your carpet looks and lasts for years: the fiber and the pad underneath. Salespeople talk a lot about color; these are the specs that actually matter.
Fiber types
Nylon is the most durable and resilient — the go-to for high-traffic areas and stairs, and it cleans well. Polyester (PET) is soft, stain-resistant, and budget-friendly, great for bedrooms but less resilient under heavy traffic. Olefin (polypropylene) resists moisture and fading, which suits basements and indoor-outdoor use, but it mats more easily. Matching fiber to the room is the whole game.
Pad density and thickness
Pad is rated by density (weight) and thickness. Higher density supports the carpet and resists traffic; that matters more than plush thickness, which can actually void some carpet warranties if it is too soft. For stairs and high-traffic zones, a firmer, denser pad extends carpet life significantly.
Matching carpet to the room
Put durable nylon in busy areas and on stairs, soft polyester in bedrooms where comfort leads, and moisture-tolerant olefin in basements. Pair each with appropriate pad. The right combination outlasts and outperforms a more expensive carpet installed over the wrong pad.
