Solid vs Engineered Hardwood: Which Is Right for You?
The solid-versus-engineered question trips up a lot of homeowners, and plenty of salespeople will steer you toward whatever they stock. Here is the straight version, with Michigan’s climate in mind.
Solid hardwood
Solid wood is a single piece of lumber, typically 3/4" thick. Its big advantage is longevity: it can be sanded and refinished many times, so a quality solid floor can last generations. The trade-off is movement — solid wood expands and contracts with humidity, so it is best on or above grade and not recommended directly over concrete slabs or in below-grade basements.
Engineered hardwood
Engineered planks are a real-wood veneer over a cross-layered plywood core, which makes them far more dimensionally stable. That stability is why engineered is the right call over concrete, in basements, and with radiant heat. A quality engineered floor with a thick wear layer can still be refinished once or twice — but thin-veneer budget products generally cannot.
How to choose
Match the product to the location: solid above grade where you want a lifetime floor; engineered over slabs, in basements, or anywhere moisture and stability are concerns. Then look at wear-layer thickness — that number, more than the “solid vs engineered” label, determines how long the floor lasts and whether you can refinish it down the road.
